When heading on a long road trip, one of the many things you need to ask yourself is, what kind of items should you pack? You might pack something different if you are only traveling for a week vs. if you travel all summer long.
However, we cover a wide range of items that you might not have considered packing, so without further ado, let us continue reading for the 45 items we recommend bringing on a road trip!
Things to Pack for a Long Road Trip
There are many things to pack for a long road trip, but the most essential are, of course, clothes, necessities, food, water, and something to help you get back on the road in case you lose signal (like a map). Still, it is crucial to remember quite a few more things as well!
1. Blanket
One of the many things to remember when going on a road trip is a comfortable blanket. This might be a given, but suppose someone is trying to stay up late at night and needs to drive to a specific destination on time due to reservations or a similar commitment. In that case, it is essential to keep a blanket on hand to prevent getting cold.
Another excellent reason for having a blanket is so that you can have a good sense of home while you sleep in whatever bed you are going to sleep in (if you choose to go to a hotel, condo, timeshare, or something of the sort).
2. First Aid Kit
You might be wondering to yourself, “Why do I need a first aid kit if all we are going to do is sightsee and travel around?” If this is you, then you have to remind yourself that anything can happen on a trip, especially for those who want to travel and explore many outdoor locations. Because of this, it is imperative to pack a first aid kit and bring it with you wherever you go.
3. Snacks
Snacks are self-explanatory, but having them on hand saves you a lot of time and trips to a convenience store, allowing you to spend more time exploring a specific location you want to visit instead of worrying about grocery shopping.
Bring along your favorite snacks and share them with those around you! Unless, of course, that snack is specifically for you. In that case, consider getting two of said snacks so there is more than plenty to go around for you and your crew to enjoy.
4. Car Charger
Nowadays, you cannot go anywhere without a car charger! You most likely have one consistently plugged into your car, but if you do not, we highly recommend getting one. However, if you want to take it a step further, we recommend purchasing a portable charger power bank.
5. Tote Bag
Tote bags are easy and simple to put your favorite snacks, drinks, or any essential items that are easy to grab and go. Not only that, but we also recommend bringing multiple tote bags if you have a large group in the car with you.
For example, you can have one tote bag of snacks and drinks up front, while another tote bag of snacks and drinks is located in the back to ensure easy access.
Another suggestion is to provide a tote bag for each family member or friend on the road trip, so they have access to their own belongings, such as coloring books, toys, or any other items they want to keep themselves entertained with.
6. Reusable Water Bottle
For those who love the environment and want to save money, we recommend investing in reusable water bottles. This is for a few reasons.
The first reason is that no one will get confused about which water bottle is theirs, especially if there are different colors. Another reason is that you will save money and space by using them.
We recommend investing in a few gallon water jugs so you can refill the water as needed. Plus, it will save you time from getting out of the car and trying to find a water fountain that someone may have contaminated with their mouth or might not have washed their hands immediately after using it.
7. Cash
Lots of banks lock your bank account immediately after you purchase something with your card from another state. Although you can inform your bank company that you will be out of town for a specific period, you might forget, or something else could go wrong. Because of this, we recommend bringing cash with you to avoid these issues. This would also be beneficial for specific locations that may only accept cash.
8. Socks
Bring socks everywhere you go, even if you don’t use them. A good example of this is if you live somewhere in the south, such as Florida or Texas, but wish to go somewhere up north, like Maine or North Dakota.
The temperature change can cause your feet to become cold, of course. Additionally, it would be wise to wear socks in the car to help regulate your body temperature if the temperature is too cold. Lastly, socks also reduce swelling, blistering, and muscle fatigue.
9. Water Jugs & Other Drinks
As mentioned above, having water jugs on hand for refilling purposes is a wise idea, especially when you can purchase some for less than $2 at your local Walmart. However, it is also essential to bring other drinks, such as Bodyarmor (an electrolyte drink), soda, coffee, or any other beverage you wish to have along the journey.
10. Caffeine or Pick-Me-Ups
This goes along with the drinks, but having something that helps you stay awake, like caffeine or other pick-me-ups, would do you wonders. Here are some examples of food or drinks that help you gain energy:
- Energy drinks
- Foods containing quinoa
- Fruits & vegetables
- Energy bars
- Energy trail mixes
- Supplements
11. Physical Map
Suppose you enter a place that does not have any signal. In that case, your GPS may not be functioning correctly for the entirety of your road trip. It is always essential to obtain a current physical map of the place you are going, especially one that is up-to-date, not one that was created in 2003 when cell phones were becoming more popular.
12. Sunglasses
How many times have you driven down the road without sunglasses while the sun is beaming straight in your face? If this were you, we highly recommend bringing sunglasses for more eye protection! Additionally, if you plan to travel and spend time outdoors, especially when the sun is at its highest, it is always a wise decision to bring sunglasses wherever you go.
13. Tissues, Napkins & Wipes
Accidents are bound to happen, especially in small spaces. In this case, it is wise to invest in tissues, napkins, and wipes. The wipes are best used if a sauce product accidentally gets somewhere in your car.
Alternatively, if someone spills their juice on the floor, you can clean it up with napkins and wipe it with wipes to ensure nothing remains sticky for a later, more difficult cleanup. We also recommend bringing a cleaning spray if this happens.
14. Sunshade
Suppose you are traveling and come across a place you want to visit. In that case, we recommend installing a sunshade to prevent your car from overheating. Additionally, get a sunshade if you plan to stay somewhere for a few days, such as at a resort or hotel.
Another thing to consider is whether you will be sleeping in your car. Having a sunshade will further protect you from those who wish to look inside, and it will also shield you from UV sun rays, keeping the car cooler.
15. Extra Clothes
Packing extra clothes should be a given, especially if you are going on a road trip that will last several weeks! The last thing you want is to wear the same clothes you’ve had on for several days.
Additionally, it is essential to pack clothes that you will actually wear, rather than those that only look nice. Think of it this way: if you will not be comfortable in those clothes while sitting in the car for most of the day, then it wouldn’t be wise to bring them along.
However, it is wise to pack some good-looking clothes as well, in case you plan on going somewhere nice. Even if you don’t plan it, you might end up in some unexpected places that require nice clothing.
16. Shampoo & Conditioner
When traveling, things aren’t quite the same without your own shampoo and conditioner. Additionally, suppose you are someone with specific accommodation needs and want to stay somewhere. In that case, likely, a hotel or Airbnb will not have accommodations specifically tailored to your needs.
17. Chapstick
You never know when your lips will get dry during a road trip. Additionally, if you are traveling to various places throughout the nation, you will encounter different climates that your body may not be accustomed to.
For example, if you live closer to the East Coast of the USA and wish to travel to the West Coast, where there are more inland states, we recommend bringing Chapstick to ensure your lips remain healthy.
18. Sunscreen
Sunscreen is also a given for most, but some people may not wish to wear it due to certain chemicals it contains. In this case, we recommend choosing brands that contain zinc oxide, such as Blue Lizard or Sport Mineral.
19. Cooler
Suppose you wish to bring your own food or want drinks that remain cool. In that case, we recommend bringing a cooler along on the ride. Not only can you save time by making sandwiches on the go, but you can also enjoy a cool, refreshing drink alongside any fresh ingredients you choose to bring along. Additionally, coolers are particularly beneficial for those with strict dietary requirements.
20. Headphones
Headphones might not be necessary if you are going on a road trip by yourself, but for those riding with others, having headphones allows passengers to play games, watch movies, TV shows, or listen to music without bothering anyone around them. If you are the driver and need to hear your surroundings, consider getting open-ear Bluetooth headphones.
21. AC Inverter
Suppose you need a car charger that can charge your laptop, especially if you need to work on the go. In that case, we recommend purchasing an AC inverter, which enables you to use standard household appliances and electronics. This also comes in handy for any off-the-grid activities you wish to undertake.
22. Jumper Cables
You never know when a problem might arise, so we highly recommend having jumper cables on hand. It might be wise to consider getting a portable jump starter as well. This would be a great device to have on hand when there is no one else around to help you jump-start your car, in case of an emergency. Even still, any jumper cables would do.
23. Spare Tire
Just as your car battery might run out, it would be extremely wise to ensure you have a spare tire on hand in case of emergencies. It is also wise to invest in a tire replacement kit. However, sometimes you get a flat, and it is a simple fix. In that case, we recommend also keeping a tire repair kit to patch things up. Make sure to have something to pump the air back in after you finish repairing it.
24. Car Insurance
Car insurance might be as simple as showing someone your phone, but if you do not have access to the Internet, then what good would that do? In that case, it is imperative to print off your car insurance and keep it in the glove box to ensure you can prove you are insured (pun intended).
25. Car Manual
Having a car manual might not seem like a huge deal, but if a malfunction were to occur or you need to find something specific, having a car manual will prove extremely helpful. Typically, this information is located in your center console or glove box, but if you don’t have one, you can usually find a PDF to print off online. If not, we recommend calling the said car company to retrieve one.
26. Driving Licence and Passport
Suppose you are a U.S. citizen traveling in the USA. Having a passport will likely not be necessary. However, it is essential when traveling to different places in the world. On the other hand, it is imperative to keep your driver’s licence with you, especially when driving in the USA. Even still, it would be essential to have it when traveling to other countries, as it serves as a form of identification.
27. Jet Boil
Although not entirely necessary, a jet boil is helpful for various reasons. One reason is that it can cook a variety of meals, such as oatmeal, dehydrated food (with the addition of water, of course), pasta, and other complex dishes. On top of this, if you are not planning on eating out anywhere on your journey, the JetBoil will be one of your “best friends.”
28. Lotion or Vaseline
Previously, we mentioned that it would be wise to have lip balm, as your lips might become chapped. However, it is also wise to consider using lotion or Vaseline, as your hands may become extremely dry. If you have difficulty with tasks due to sensory issues, we recommend investing in a pair of gloves to help alleviate the discomfort. Plus, it will protect your hands from any of the elements (especially in dry and/or cold climates).
29. Hand Sanitizer
Sometimes you might be somewhere that doesn’t have access to any water or even soap. In this case, bring hand sanitizer with you on the road. Also, if you plan to stop at certain places, keep some inside your bag with you. That way, you can keep your hands clean in areas that may not have adequate sanitation, such as the woods or other outdoor locations.
30. Pillow
Following the suggestion to bring a blanket at the beginning of this article, we recommend getting your favorite pillow. This is especially true if you plan to sleep in different motels or accommodations. More often than not, the pillows they use are incredibly uncomfortable.
Additionally, they are not considered “yours” and do not provide you with a sense of belonging or home. Lastly, if you wish to take a nap during the car ride, it would be beneficial to have a pillow to prevent neck strain after sleeping for some time.
31. Tire Pressure Gauge
Sometimes, you might suspect that one of your tires is not at the correct pressure. Therefore, purchase a tire pressure gauge to ensure you know the proper pressure. If it is low, you can easily put more air in it at a gas station or purchase a portable tire inflator.
32. Shoes & Hiking Boots
For those going hiking, we recommend investing in excellent hiking boots to ensure a good grip with each step. However, if you are not visiting many places outdoors, we recommend still having a good pair of shoes or sneakers to ensure your feet do not start hurting after walking all day.
33. Bug Spray
Bug spray is, of course, one of the best things you can have on a long road trip. However, although some people might be happy with bug spray containing DEET, there are plenty of other bug sprays you might want to consider that do not include it.
34. Camera
Many people prefer to use their phones, but consider using a camera, especially one with a high pixel count, to capture as many details as possible. Additionally, we recommend purchasing from a trusted brand like Nikon, Canon, or Sony to ensure you receive a good deal. However, if you are still unsure, we recommend conducting some research if you don’t have one yet.
35. Games
There are plenty of games to play in the car! We recommend getting this Well Balanced road trip game, which contains 55 different ideas for kids and adults to enjoy!
36. Podcast & Audiobooks
What is a road trip without podcasts or audiobooks? If you love books but are the one driving, we recommend audiobooks or podcasts, as this is an excellent way to allow your brain to think while driving a long distance.
37. Physical Books
Suppose you do not want to listen but love reading. In that case, bring a physical book! You have plenty of light during the day to utilize this. If you still wish to read the book but do not want to disturb anybody, we recommend bringing an e-reader along with you instead.
38. Road Trip Playlist
There are many songs out there in the world, but what are the best songs to use on a road trip? Well, that is entirely up to you to decide. Be sure to create the playlist before embarking on the journey.
39. Extra Batteries
You never know when you will need batteries. We recommend bringing extra batteries for whatever object you need them for.
40. Flashlight or Headlamp
Speaking of batteries, you will need them for the flashlight or headlamp you are going to bring. It will come in handy in case of emergencies or if you need to check underneath for something. Although our phones have flashlights, a physical one shows more light.
41. Other Person to Accompany You
Lastly, we recommend having someone accompany you on your long car ride. This is to help keep you company, but also for your safety and mine. The other person can hold you accountable and vice versa. Plus, it would be more fun having someone come along with you!
Conclusion
To summarize everything, there are many wonderful and valuable things to bring along with you on a road trip. However, we suggest keeping things simple, safe, and fun! We hope this article has helped you consider some things you might not have considered beforehand.
